Registry 101: Miss Clover’s Favorite Picks

So I’ve already talked about my experience with registries, angst over plates (of all things) and given some tips.

We already have plenty of the things we need, but we did register for some upgrades and nice to haves. I have a few things I’m extra-excited to get, random though they might be:

  • A waffle maker*
  • Glass plates: at least 20—these will be so great for parties and go with anything. BM Mathlete and Designer B have them, and so did my pledge daughter’s mom (at least 60; she hosted big company parties). They’re like 99 cents at Ikea.
  • Water goblets: I would have made fun of this one until I hosted Thanksgiving with pint glasses. Brought the whole tablesetting down.
  • A slow cooker: Like a real grown-up! This one (via Bed Bath & Beyond) is rated best by Cooks Illustratedcrockpot
  • An ice bucket (beats sending guests to rummage through the freezer)
  • A dutch oven. I want the 5 quart oval, in green–it would be great for making soups and stocks.LC
  • Image via Chef’s Catalog
  • Steak Knives (this ones all Shamrock, but its his #1)

We set up our registries with these items (and those darn dishes), but Dad Clover’s wife has already told me we need to add more. It’s really trick to know what to look for–how many stores? How many items? At what price points? I’ve heard to register for half as many gifts as guests (assuming one gift per couple) + number of shower invites + half as many gifts as engagement party guests. I’ve also heard of registering for as many gifts as guests. I think the bigger deal is thinking about YOUR guests to YOUR wedding, and making sure you have an assortment you think offers options for your guests. (Although the math teacher in me quite enjoyed Macy’s breakdown by number, price point and more when we registered).

I feel a little uncomfortable asking for things, but I also hope to get things I would use if our guests do want to get us something. At the end of the day, guests usually are buying you a gift because it’s a clear way of celebrating with you and for you, and supporting both of you as you start your life together.

What were your registry favorites? Did you already have your household started before registering?

*In my head, you can’t get a waffle maker until you get married, so I’ve been waiting for YEARS. I am now going to get six waffle makers because too many people** know that.

**Some of the “people” is my lunch bunch group of girls that eats in my classroom, and if they get me a waffle maker that’s the one I’m keeping.
